Our Mission

The Know Your Lemons Foundation’s mission is to improve breast cancer survival rates globally by educating individuals on the 12 symptoms of breast cancer, how to perform a self-exam, and understanding their screening options. We aim to break down cultural, linguistic, and societal barriers that prevent people from seeking early detection and medical advice.

What Makes Us Unique

The Power of Lemons: The Foundation’s use of lemons as a visual metaphor has transformed breast cancer education. The iconic “12 Signs of Breast Cancer” graphic uses lemons to represent different symptoms, making it easier for people to understand and remember what to look for.

Inclusive & Accessible: The Know Your Lemons Foundation’s resources, including the Know Your Lemons app, are designed to be inclusive of all genders, and are available in more than 45 languages, helping to bridge the information gap in underserved communities.

Innovative Education: In addition to print and digital resources, the Foundation uses a wide range of engaging tools, from interactive online content to mobile apps, workshops, and video guides, ensuring the content is accessible to all learning styles.

Flagship Initiatives

Know Your Lemons App: A free app available on iOS and Android that was named the Best Health and Fitness app by the Webby Awards. The Know Your Lemons app is a comprehensive, personalized breast health education tool that teaches self-exam, calculates risk, creates a custom screening plan, and encourages a breast routine through reminders and earning badges. Users of the app are called “Lemonistas”, people who have become confident and intelligent with their breast health, and are part of Know Your Lemons Foundation’s global movement to spread education worldwide.

#KnowYourLemons Campaign: Our global breast health education campaign in print and on social media that uses lemons to illustrate signs of breast cancer to overcome taboo, fear, and literacy issues that contribute to late detection. Available in 42 languages, it is the most popular breast cancer awareness campaign in history reaching over 2 billion people worldwide, used in schools, clinics, hospitals, and communities everywhere.

Global Volunteer Training Courses: The Know Your Lemons Foundation trains volunteers, healthcare workers, and community leaders across the world to become certified breast health educators, to help improve early detection for breast cancer. Volunteers are equipped with tools to teach interactive breast health classes in their communities, or to share education on social media. As of 2026, there are over 1,700 volunteers educating in over 80 countries.

Know Your Lemons Workplace Program: Our innovative point health solution helps companies encourage screening and breast health for their employees through a company-wide campaign and education program. Employees gain access to exclusive screening tools, risk assessments and innovative features on the Know Your Lemons Workplace Pro app. Used by some of the world’s biggest companies, it is changing how women’s health is supported in the workplace in an impactful way.

Know Your Lemons Schools Program: 1-in-8 women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. Finding it early is the most important key to survival. Whether a student will develop breast cancer someday, or their partner or family member, it’s important to be able to identify symptoms and get on the right screening plan to improve chances for early detection. Since we use lemons to represent breasts, our classes overcome censorship and taboo to set up students for a lifetime of breast cancer awareness and tools to be proactive about their health.
