Flatten the breast by stretching your arm behind your head. You can do this while lying down, sitting, or showering.
Feel the area from your armpit to your collarbone to the bottom of your ribs. This is where lymph nodes live. Sometimes these areas swell when cancer is present.

What to look for
Milk lobes and lymph nodes are normal lumps in your breast that feel like soft peas or soft beans. Cancerous lumps often feel hard, like a lemon seed, and are usually immovable. They can be any shape or size.

When to Self-Exam
The best time to breast self-exam is a few days after the end of your period when you are least tender or swollen. No period? Do it the first day of the month.
