World Cancer Day #CloseTheCareGap campaign focuses on Inequities in Cancer Care and Advocating for Change

U.S. Delegate to the World Cancer Day Advisory Board provides free breast health educational resources worldwide

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – January 25, 2024 – This Sunday, February 4, the global community will commemorate World Cancer Day and participate in the campaign to Close the Care Gap, engaging world leaders to ask them to adopt strategies aimed at rectifying inequities in cancer detection and treatment. The Know Your Lemons Foundation, a global charity focused on early detection for breast cancer, serves as the U.S. delegate to the World Cancer Day advisory board and will be promoting World Cancer Day activities throughout the week and beyond.

Since its establishment in 2000, World Cancer Day has served as a catalyst to enhance awareness and understanding of cancer, advocated for proactive measures to prevent, detect, and treat this disease, and evolved into one of the most widely celebrated health awareness days worldwide.

“Health equity is fundamental to our mission,” said Dr. Corrine Ellsworth-Beaumont, founder and CEO at the Know Your Lemons Foundation. “We stand united with the global community in urging leaders to prioritize equitable cancer care, and are proud to offer globally accessible educational programs for breast cancer prevention.”

The “Close the Care Gap” campaign highlights the barriers to essential cancer care, addresses issues of equity in cancer care, and rallies individuals and organizations to call on governments to address the disparities that hinder access to cancer services due to age, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic situation or geographical location. Even when these services are available, many individuals encounter financial and geographical barriers to obtaining the care they require. The campaign emphasizes that these constraints, often rooted in social determinants of health, are not insurmountable and must be addressed.

The Know Your Lemons Foundation encourages everyone to participate in World Cancer Day’s “Close the Care Gap” pledge, and download and share their free, award-winning breast health app, which teaches the 12 symptoms of breast cancer, risk factors, and how to self-exam, and features a period tracker, custom screening plan, and more. 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer, but when detected early their odds of survival are 99%.

“If it wasn’t for the Know Your Lemons app, I don’t know how long it would have been until I found the lump myself,” shared breast cancer survivor Lucie Cockerille. “The app gave me the confidence I needed to know that I was checking properly. Because of the Know Your Lemons app, I found the lump. It saved my life.”
