Announcing our new partner: Dense Breasts Canada
The Know Your Lemons Foundation and Dense Breasts Canada know that early detection of breast cancer is critical and are joining forces to help women be proactive to improve their odds of survival. Through educating women about the importance of breast self-examination and the risks associated with dense breasts, both organizations are teaming up to empower women to better take charge of their breast health.
Empowering women includes educating them about symptoms and risk factors to improve the early detection of breast cancer. One significant risk factor is breast density. The challenge is that breast density and the implications are often not clearly communicated to patients. Without this knowledge, it can lead to fewer breast cancers being found early.
“By partnering with Dense Breasts Canada, we can expand education to more women in North America and help them understand the importance of knowing and understanding one’s breast density,” said Corrine Ellsworth-Beaumont, CEO and Founder of the Know Your Lemons Foundation. “We will also work together to include Canadian screening recommendations in a way that is tailored to the individual to eliminate the confusion when it comes to understanding one’s risk and the options available to improve early detection.”
1-in-8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Dense breasts are the most prevalent risk factor for breast cancer. Over 40% of women, aged 40 and older, in North America have dense breasts. Although common and normal, dense breasts put women at an increased risk for developing breast cancer. Mammograms are the standard method of screening but are less accurate in women with dense breast tissue. Both cancer and dense tissue appear white on a mammogram, creating a masking effect. That is why self-exam is particularly critical for women with dense breasts.
Jennie Dale, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Dense Breasts Canada said about the partnership, “Our organization is excited to work with Know Your Lemons. We love the creative, beautiful and accessible way KYL shares information to empower women to be breast informed.”
