Meet our German Mona Lisa, Susanne Schick!

Tell us a little bit about yourself - where are you from? What language(s) do you speak? How long have you been doing voice acting?

My name is Sue. I was born and raised in a small medieval town named Marburg, located in the center of Germany. After graduating high school, I chose to live for nearly a decade in the urban jungle of Berlin where I worked in journalism & events. I left in 2014 and went from one capital to another: the rather decelerated Helsinki, Finland. In addition to German, I speak fluent English as well as Finnish. The art of voice acting
has been a part of me since the late 2000s, but I didn’t go full-time until 2020 when I became self-employed with She Sounds Great.

Have you worked on other healthcare voice projects? If yes, how was this Know Your Lemons app project different than others you’ve worked on? If no, what were the challenges you came across with doing healthcare voice recording for this project?

Yes, I have voiced healthcare projects before, such as vaccination manufacturing and peristomal skin care explainer clips. But on top of their responsible agencies’ professionalism, collaborating with Know Your Lemons was also very warm and cheerful right from the start. At this non-profit organization, the team pours their pure hearts into the project, which you can totally feel during audio production.

We use the unique character of Mona Lisa for our self-exam audio guide. What was your favorite part about being Mona Lisa’s voice for this project?

One of the joys of voice acting (and dubbing) is that you get to jump into any character your client wants you to—from young to old, monsters, dinosaurs, or other fictitious roles. But I did not have the honor of lending a renowned legend like Mona Lisa my voice before, and I love knowing that I might play a tiny part in saving someone’s life one day if they listen carefully to the German audio guide and do their self-exams regularly!

Breast health hasn’t been on many people’s radar, but that’s really starting to change with the work that Know Your Lemons has been doing globally. Were you thinking about breast health before taking on this project? What are your thoughts now?

Most of us don’t realize the importance of breast health until a loved one is suddenly affected with their life being at risk. Before working with the Know Your Lemons Foundation, I read that statistically 1 in 8 women will be confronted with breast cancer in her life, and to me, that is a frightening number! During the recording process of this self-exam audio guide and its app introduction video, I got to learn new details about breast health myself. Early detection saves lives! It is that simple! And as I’ve supported local cancer research charities for many years now, I will gladly add Know Your Lemons to that list! The style of how they address women, provide education, and raise awareness for a very important topic is unique! My advice: Go get that app and check yourself!

Anything else you’d like to add? What was your experience with working with the Know Your Lemons team?

Thanks to the whole Know Your Lemons team, especially Corrine, for trusting me with your audio guide, and to Katja for reaching out initially. It was a pleasure working with you across three time zones around the world for a good cause! All the best to the foundation and stay healthy everyone! Yours truly, Mona “Sue” Lisa ;)
