Biography of Ananda Center for Cancer Research (ACCR)
Ananda Center for Cancer Research (ACCR), founded in 2022 and based in Kampala, Uganda, is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing cancer control through comprehensive research, education, and cancer law. Our mission is to protect and promote public health by empowering communities with cancer education, conducting impactful research, and translating research findings into actionable cancer policies and regulations that ensure evidence-based cancer control strategies and uphold patients' rights. ACCR collaborates closely with government bodies, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the public to raise awareness, enhance accessibility to cancer care, and investigate the causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of all types of cancer. By working with governments and training the next generation of scientists, ACCR strives to implement evidence-based cancer control measures, particularly in underserved areas.

Founder Biography (Dr. Annet Nakaganda)
Dr. Annet Nakaganda is a distinguished cancer epidemiologist and clinical officer with over 20 years of experience in clinical research, focusing on cancer control, epidemiology, and clinical trials. As the visionary founder of the Ananda Center for Cancer Research (ACCR), Dr. Nakaganda established the organization with a mission to combat cancer through research, innovation, and law. She is responsible for leading the strategic direction of the organization, overseeing its research and innovation efforts, and managing a multidisciplinary team of researchers and scientists.
Dr. Nakaganda holds a Ph.D. in Medicine, a Master’s degree in Public Health (with Distinction) from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom, and a BSc in Psychology from Makerere University, Kampala. Her career in clinical research began in the early 2000s with groundbreaking work on HIV prevention, particularly the HIVNET 012 clinical trial, which introduced the use of single-dose Nevirapine as a cost-effective strategy for preventing mother-to-child transmission. She later shifted her focus to cancer research, playing a pivotal role in establishing the Uganda Cancer Institute’s Research and Training Directorate and Cancer Epidemiology and Clinical Trials Unit, as well as contributing to the development of the Uganda National Cancer Control Programme.
With extensive international experience, Dr. Nakaganda has also worked on clinical trials at the NHS Manchester Royal Infirmary Hospital, including cutting-edge CAR T-Cell therapy trials. Her expertise spans cancer surveillance, cancer registration, survivorship, and cancer control in low-resource settings. In addition to her research, Dr. Nakaganda is passionate about higher education and has served as a lecturer and subject matter expert on clinical research and public health curricula at institutions such as the University of Warwick and the University of Manchester.
Dr. Nakaganda has received numerous accolades for her contributions to cancer research and has been published in several peer-reviewed journals. Her ongoing work focuses on advancing cancer research best practices, expanding cancer control strategies, and promoting the use of locally generated data to inform cancer policies in low-resource environments.
