Lemons Leading to Action: Aubra’s Story

Doing a self-exam and seeing the 12 signs of breast cancer prompted Aubra to call her doctor to get further testing

The past couple of years have been a whirlwind for Aubra and her family. In March 2023, her husband was diagnosed with a severe, life-altering neuro disease. In June 2023, she gave birth to their second son, and in February 2024 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and completed surgery, chemo and radiation May 2024.

Aubra started to feel symptoms of breast cancer after feeling some soreness in her breast while wearing her baby in a carrier. A month before she felt this she had had her well-woman exam with her doctor who reminded her to do her self-breast exams each month. So she laid down to do her exam and felt something in her breast. Immediately she visualized the Know Your Lemons 12 signs egg carton image and she knew that what she was feeling was a lot like a lemon seed.

So she called her doctor as soon as possible, got a mammogram, ultrasound, and eventually a biopsy that confirmed she had breast cancer in her right breast. She quickly got scheduled of a lumpectomy that went well. She had clear margins but due to a high oncotype score she was recommended to do chemo and radiation. She did several rounds of chemo over a period of about two and a half months, and 18 rounds of radiation over the summer for a month and a half. Now she’s on daily medication and shots every 4 weeks and will continue the medication and the shots for the next five years.

Aubra and her family after she rang the bell, celebrating her completion of radiation!

Through much perseverance and strength she can now report that she is cancer-free! She has since downloaded the Know Your Lemons app which helps her to continue doing her monthly checks. Thanks to her fight and early detection she is enjoying each moment in Nashville, TN with her family and getting back into the things that she loves such as cooking and reading.

Personal Message from Aubra

I want to urge each of you not to think you're Invincible, because you're in your 30s. I was 36 when I got diagnosed. I just had a baby too. So I was, you know, relatively new postpartum and just because of that, that doesn't make you exempt from breast cancer. It can get anybody. So know your 12 signs of breast cancer, be doing your monthly checks and call your doctor and ask when you find something unusual.
